It is an incredible honor to serve as the president of the Encinitas Rotary Club. I am thrilled to be a member and an officer of a club that has such a long history of service to the local and global communities.  As president for the 2013-2014 Rotary year, I am proud and challenged by the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of a long lineage of great members and presidents.

I look forward to continuing the tradition of the Encinitas Rotary Club and serving the community in the Rotary Avenues of Service: Community service, New Generations (youth & young adult), Vocational, International and Club service.  The diversity of our projects reflects the broad needs of the local and global communities.  The projects and charities supported by the Encinitas Rotary address polio eradication, safe drinking water, housing, literacy, poverty, and senior services to name a few.  Major community and fundraising efforts include the Encinitas Rotary Wine Festival which this year will benefit nineteen 501(c)3 charities, the youth soccer tournament and the Encinitas Rotary Home Team which serves local seniors in need.

For the 2013-2014 Rotary year, we will “Engage Rotary and Change Lives” as communicated by the Rotary International theme.  For me this means to appreciate that I have both the ability and the luxury to give; to give to people and communities in developing countries around the globe, to give to our local community, and to give to one another.  To give because today I have the ability to do so, and because today my brothers and sisters are in need.

To the members of the Encinitas Rotary Club I say thank you for your ‘Service Above Self’ and thank you for challenging yourselves to make a difference this year and for the years to follow.  I look forward to:  sitting next to you on the soccer field, planting trees with you at a local school, changing a light bulb for a senior citizen with you, eliminating disease with you, educating the future generations with you, raising money for community charities with you, and contributing to the Rotary Foundation with you.  I look forward to making a difference with you because I know that together we will accomplish amazing things.

To the community I say, “join us”.  Join our effort to improve our community.  Or, join our membership and experience the fellowship of giving.

Here’s to a great year.
